TRISTA make the following reminders for the effects of various types of stains washing:
1. Ink (of ballpoint pens, or any kind of ink and ink paste):
=>Leather or cloth surfaces smudged with ink can be cleaned yet with limited effect. The ink can only be reduced. (Dyeing treatments are recommended for non- Natural Cowhide materials.)
=>Ink on materials like PVC, enameled leather, synthetic leather cannot be removed.
2. Dye migration (from other items e.g. denim trousers, or caused when surrounding items lose colors, or when washed by the owner):
=>Leather or cloth surfaces smudged with dye migration can be cleaned yet with limited effect. The dye can only be reduced. (Dyeing treatments are recommended for non- Natural Cowhide materials.)
=>Ink on materials like PVC, enameled leather, synthetic leather cannot be removed. =>In cases of serious dye migration due to soaking in water or home washing, quotes will be provided on a case-by-case basis.
3. Yellowing:
=>If yellowing occurs to leather or cloth surfaces, cleaning results will be limited. The yellowing can only be reduced. (Dyeing treatments are recommended for non- Natural Cowhide materials.)
=>Yellowing caused by materials deterioration on materials like PVC, enameled leather, synthetic leather cannot be removed.
4. Glue extrusion (from the bag):
=>This may occur to all kinds of materials. Cleaning results will be limited. Excessive cleaning is not advised. If the glue has caused dye migration, cleaning results will be limited. Occasionally, foaming may occur after the glue is washed off. Or interior materials may have been damaged after the glue is washed.
5. Stickiness:
=>This is a type of material deterioration caused by humidity or high temperatures. Cleaning results will vary on different materials. Various cleaning results: 1. When enameled leather or PVC bags become sticky, washing can only reduce (not remove) the stickiness. Due to Singapore’s humid weather, improper storage can cause reoccurrence of stickiness. Please note: how well the stickiness on enameled leather and PVC products can be treated will be revealed only after tests 2. When stickiness occurs to regular leather or cloth surfaces due to material deterioration, washing/cleaning can only reduce it. Later on, the stickiness will return (maybe as early as within a few weeks, months or as late as up to a year). 3. With the cleaning + dyeing treatment on leather, the stickiness will be removed without reoccurrence, as a principle. But if improper storage persists, stickiness is likely to return.
6. Animal urines:
=>The product will be cleaned to meet hygiene standards, but if the urine has stained the product, cleaning results will be limited. The urine odor may not be completely removed but only reduced. In severe cases, quotes will be provided on a case-by-case basis.
7. Smudges by external liquids (and stained by water or grease):
=>all smudges and stains can only be reduced (not removed).
=>Water/grease stains or smudges on leather, PVC, enameled leather and synthetic leather cannot be removed. (Dyeing treatments are recommended for non- Natural Cowhide materials.)
8. Molding:
=>The moldy product will be cleaned to meet hygiene standards. But with severe cases where the mold has caused mold spots or de-coloring & fading, cleaning will not restore the product to its original state. (Dyeing treatments are recommended for non- Natural Cowhide materials.) The mold odor can only be reduced (not removed).
9. Fading:
=>Fading is caused by material deterioration. Cleaning will not restore the product to its original state. (Dyeing treatments are recommended for non- Natural Cowhide materials.)
10. Metal oxidation-based rust spots (damage & de-coloring):
=>metal oxidation-based rust spots are caused by material deterioration. Cleaning will not restore the product to its original state. Plating can be considered to improve the exterior color & appearance.
11. Wear and tear (cracking, ripping, etc.), deformation:
=>This is caused by material damage or deterioration and cannot be cleaned, or the cleaning cannot restore the product to its original state.
12. Oxidation:
=>This is due to material damage or deterioration (which will worsen) and cannot be cleaned, or the cleaning cannot restore the product to its original state. A professional consultation will be made to see if customization is needed.
13. Foaming:
=>This is due to the malfunction of the glue between materials. Cleaning will not restore the product to its original state. The foaming might worsen.
14. Residual glue:
=>Once the product is attached with residual glue, cleaning results are limited. Excessive cleaning is not recommended. If the glue has caused dye migration, cleaning results will be limited. Occasionally, once the residual glue is washed off, one is likely to discover that the interior materials are already damaged.
15. Odor (of mold, animal urines, etc.):
=>Cleaning will bring the product to meet hygiene standards. Regarding odor, it may not be completely removed but only reduced. (Odor) may not be completely removed.
16. Other severe types of dirt (besides the above cases):
=>The long-standing deep-rooted dirt that takes time to accumulate. In cases where such dirt is already transferred onto other materials, the dirt can only be reduced as the cleaning results are limited and it is handled in such a way that will not damage the materials.
17. Certain types of stain cannot be removed and can only be reduced. Cloth surfaces react positively to cleaning. But whether some specific dirt can be reduced can only be ascertained after the cleaning. Should you have any concerns regarding the above info, you are advised to thoroughly assess your needs or contact our customer service to discuss whether your product can undergo tests.
1. In cases of ink smudges or dye migration, cleaning results are limited, and the smudge can only be reduced. (Dyeing treatments are recommended for non-Natural Cowhide materials.)
2. Yellowing on cloth surfaces can only be reduced in degrees that depend on the product itself.
3. With repeated use, the vertical and horizontal interlocks on the cloth surfaces are easily ripped, especially in areas invisible to the naked eye. Further treatment may lead to broken threads or holes in the cloth. When the cloth surface itself is already torn or has holes in it, cleaning might worsen the wear and tear, (as the cloth material is of perishable organism, not as lasting as iron or steel).
In addition, cleaning such products may lead to slight fuzzing or worsened fuzzing if the product is already fuzzy in the first place.
4. After being treated, the brightness of certain cloth, e.g. canvas or calico, be it dark or light, may fade or be whitewashed
5. PVC-like materials can only be cleaned but not undergo dyeing. (PVC materials can only be cleaned to remove bacteria and mold. Exterior yellowing, dye migration and so on cannot be removed by cleaning.)
6. In cases of foaming and degumming, cloth surfaces cannot be restored to its original state. Cleaning/washing may worsen it.
7. We cannot offer treatment for scraping, damage and folding marks on decorative materials like straw-plaited items, beads, spangles.
Should the detached beads and spangles require sewing, quotes will be provided on a case-by-case basis.
8. Natural Cowhide can only be cleaned, and stains (on Natural Cowhide) can only be reduced, with its honey color retained. Remaining stains can be reduced by way of washing which will also soften the leather. If the dirt is already absorbed into the inner layer of the leather (over long periods of time), the lessening effect will be limited (the effect can only be ascertained after the wash). The worst scenario is that only the bacteria and mold will be removed, without much change on the exterior. It is normal that after the wash, Natural Cowhide will become darker in color.
Dyeing treatment is recommended for leather products except for Natural Cowhide, aniline leather and gradient-colored leather (from snakes, ostriches, etc.) Washing can only lessen the stains on the leather surfaces (cleaning results can only be ascertained after the wash). Washing will mainly remove the bacteria and mold, without much changes on the exterior. If you have chosen the ‘Cleaning’ service for a leather product with visible dirt on the exterior, you are advised to return to the previous page and re-assess your option. Thank you.
9. If the following applies to your product: a. over-soaking in water or dye migration caused by mixing items of different materials in the same wash; b. severe case of molding; c. apparent worms or signs of previous worm nests; strong odors or dirt caused by animal urines, TRISTA maintains the right to give individual quotes for further treatment (Should this incur a shipping cost to return the product, the cost will be covered by the product owner/customer).
Remind you that you only need to refer to the precautions regarding the material of your item, no need to read the full text. |
Types Of Leather
Cow leather and lambskin
After jet dyeing, the pores and patterns on the cowskin or lambskin may be slightly covered, resulting in less distinct patterns than its original state, yet without undermining the overall appearance. Additionally, if the product comes with existing problems such as dryness, rips & tears, cracking on the leather surfaces, such problems will persist after the jet dyeing, but the product will carry the same color as that of the jet dye. If a ballpoint pen has left an indented mark on the inner layer of the leather, the indentation might surface after the jet dyeing.
Natural Cowhide(Original unprocessed leather)
Natural Cowhide are bleached, pre-dyed leather. Pre-used leather is clean and pale. Used leather will turn into the color of honey with an added sheen, due to water, grease and UV light exposure. Excessive dirt will darken or soil the leather, a general unpleasant sight. Washing can reduce dirt/stain on the leather surface and revitalize the leather. If the dirt is already absorbed down to the inner layer (over long periods of time), the lessening effect will be limited. The effect will be limited (the effect can only be ascertained after the wash). The worst scenario is that only the bacteria and mold will be removed, without much change on the exterior. It is normal that after the wash, Natural Cowhide will become darker in color.
Glitter Coated Leather
Glitter Coated Leather gets its special glittering effect after special treatments on the leather surfaces. Used leather will turn dark and dirty, and the wear and tear will reduce its glittering effect. Washing will mainly remove the bacteria and mold, but the dirt/stain on the leather can only be reduced (with limited effect). To remove dirt will require dyeing treatments, but mechanical jet dyeing cannot retain the original glittering effect of the product. Customers are thus advised to (a) accept the dyeing treatment which is normally done for leather maintenance. The dyeing will remove the dirt and also the glitter and leave behind a rough texture. If the glitter leather is of the suede-like category, we may consider handling it like suede and touch up the color to retain the glitter. Please refer to points of caution for suede. (Normally the dyeing treatment is applied for maintenance.); (b) take the cleaning service only. Though cleaning cannot remove all the dirt, but some customers consider that cleaning will reduce the dirt and retain the beauty of the original product design, so are often satisfied with this option.
Braided leather
Jet dyeing for braided leather bags e.g. Bottega Veneta bags is done on the surface and will not cover areas where plaits overlap. As braided leather bags are put together with cut leather, their post-dye texture will not be as delicate (as other kinds of bags). (Customers are not advised to submit braided leather bags of more than two colors.)
Suede
Suede has a special pattern caused by fine or rough grinding on sandpaper, plus a short fur on the surface, and dirt can often get stuck in the irregular patterns. The dirt on the surface can be brushed off. There might be uneven coloring on suede surface caused by shades due to flattened fur. The degree of how tenaciously the dirt stays in the surface varies. The results will vary after the wash and special treatments, depending on the dirt level. For instance, (a) yellowing will be reduced but not entirely eliminated; (b) the result will show up better in areas with shallow-embedded dirt than with deep-embedded dirt; (c) fading may occur to certain items in contact with or immersed in water. To grade dirtiness from 1 to 10, 1 is clean, and 10 is dirty. Items of Grade 10 dirtiness will be reduced to Grade 6 dirtiness, after the treatment. Additionally, suede may pick up some dye odor after the treatment (e.g., color touch-up). The odor will be reduced later on. Should you have any concerns regarding the above info, you are advised to thoroughly assess your needs. Sewing threads on suede will not be affected by the dye color. When there is a huge color difference between suede and sewing threads, e.g. black leather and white threads, the white threads will come out rather dark after the treatment, but will still more or less appear as white threads.
Benzene dyed and gradient-colored leather (example: Crocodile Leather / Aligator Leather、ostrich leather, etc.)
Benzene dyed and gradient-colored leather have one thing in common, i.e., showing more than 2 colors on the same leather product. Yet mechanical jet dyeing cannot restore products of more than 2 colors to their original state, so customers are advised to (a) pick one section on the leather for us to mix and create a similar color for jet dyeing; (b) to accept cleaning as a maintenance treatment. Though cleaning cannot remove all the dirt, but some customers consider that cleaning will reduce the dirt and retain the beauty of the original product design, so are often satisfied with this option.
Synthetic Leather、Leatherette、PVC、Patent Leather
Synthetic leather and Leatherette are made with cloth covered by surface coating (pending detailed classifications), so dyeing materials will not attach to non-natural leather surfaces and dirt will not be easily washed off. For linings often seen in the insides of luxury bags, e.g. bag linings, we offer the following treatments:
1. For bags dyeing & repair, TRISTA offers only dyeing treatments, and only basic cleaning for linings made with synthetic leather.
2. For bags made with Synthetic Leather、Leatherette、PVC、Patent Leather, many customers opt to take the cleaning & maintenance service only. Cleaning cannot remove all the dirt but will remove the bacteria and mold, some customers consider that cleaning will reduce the dirt and retain the beauty of the original product design, so they are often satisfied with this option.
Snakeskin
Snakeskin is thin and unendurable. Snakes’ uniformly diamond-shaped scales, if rubbed in the wrong direction, will protrude upwards, and should be handled only with wipes. Any small scraping, ripping or folding cannot be treated. Customers are advised to thoroughly check on the status of their products before submitting them for cleaning. Dyeing is not recommended for natural snakeskin or leather of gradient colors. Dyeing will yield to uniform colors but in a different texture.
Imitation Animal Fur(Artificial Fur)
Mold odor on imitation animal fur on shoes and bags (e.g. horse coat, rabbit fur etc.) can be eliminated by dry cleaning. There should not be any residual odor unless it’s severe. Certain rare cases of brittle fur may occur, much like the rupture in split (human) hair. Before submitting the product, customers are required to have it closely examined.
Multiple Materials
Multiple Materials are often seen in patchwork bags that are put together with more than 3 materials. As different materials will be treated differently, patchwork bags are more of a challenge to handle. If necessary, quotes will be provided on a case-by-case basis.

9. Multiple Materials
Regarding dyeing treatments for Patent Leather, TRISTA reminds you to note the following (this service is not available for placement. Should you require this service, please contact our customer service)
When treated with a dark-color dye close to the product’s original texture, the Patent Leather will may become thicker after the dyeing treatment, and its texture may not be as delicate as before. The sewing color may become fuzzy. In most cases, the dirt will be covered by the dye or become less visible. After the dyeing treatment, colors can be restored in areas with mold spots or color loss, but with color differences. Areas with fogging caused by mold spots might be restored to its original brightness but in various degrees, depending on the original color and brightness of the material. Despite slight unevenness, the final result will be uniformly bright. In cases of severe material deterioration, abrasion and disjoint (or even rough texture) on the leather surface, the restoration will be extremely limited. Undamaged surfaces on Patent Leather can be restored better. Our manual repair will cause faint marks of manual brushing. The traits of Patent Leather might result in stickiness to return in humid weather. Storage in environments with dehumidifiers or air-conditioners is advised. Ill storage will cause material deterioration or stickiness to return. Dyeing treatment will have limited results on sticky Patent Leather. Color touch-up will not be possible for areas with material deterioration or with smudges of certain materials. Gold foil font can be retained (but confirmation is required on a case-by-case basis). Our service will not return the Patent Leather to its original brand new state, and in normal circumstances, can only improve the dye migration or fading. Refunds are not possible in special cases where the color touch-up treatment ends with limited effect.

Regarding our various dyeing treatments and results, TRISTA reminds you to note the following:
Most leather products cannot be treated as cloth and cleaned by washing. For colored leather previously treated with dyeing, excessive cleaning will damage its texture and color. Gentle wiping will have no visible improvement on most stains. For single-color leather products, TRISTA advise dyeing treatments for better results. For Natural Cowhide, Benzene dyed leather and leather of gradient colors that are not recommended for dyeing, e.g., snakeskin or ostrich skin, TRISTA offers better alternatives. Please refer to details and illustration on leather. In leather dyeing treatments, surfaces of the leather product will undergo 10 professional procedures:
Cleaning -- Color Matching – Color Testing – Covering – Jet Dyeing – Setting – Air Dry – Grooming – Deodorizing – Maintenance. Leather treatments will lead to various results, depending on the age of products, use frequency, storage condition and repeated wear and tear. As such, the following problems may persist after treatments:
1. After dyeing, the leather surface will not have a texture as fine as its original state, and will be slightly hardened, which will be improved after repeated use.
2. In cases where the leather and sewing threads are of different colors, they will have the same color after the dye.
3. If the sewing threads are made of cotton and are already fluffing or ripping on the surface threads, the dye will cause splitting and further fluffing, Without affecting the tenacity of the sewing threads.
4. The leather edge paint cannot be covered up during the jet dyeing and will smudge onto some part of the leather which cannot be completely removed even by wiping.
5. Only cleaning is applied for Natural Cowhide. Dirt/stains can only be reduced. (The worst scenario is that the bacteria and mold is removed without much improvement on the surface.) The honey color of the Natural Cowhide can be retained but might darken later on.
6. In cases where excessive ornaments, e.g. beads, spangles and metal rivets, have to be avoided from dyeing or require sewing, if dislodged, quotes will be provided on a case-by-case basis.
7. Cloth materials in the leather seam (e.g. zippers) that cannot be covered up during the jet dyeing will be re-colored by the dye. Please note that the cloth surface will become rough after the dye and pre-existing fluffing will become more visible.
8. Abraded leather will have a rough or fluffy texture. After the dye, the abrasion will not be removed, and its rough or fluffy texture will persist, with the color touched up. After the dye, its color-locking capability will be weak and prone to color loss later on. Dyeing results are limited on damaged leather.
9. Areas with foil gold font will be avoided from dyeing. But the avoided area and the dyed area will end up with certain color differences. If cover-up is required from the dye, please state accordingly in the note. Likewise, we will notify you if need be.
10. For certain colors (like metallic colors, e.g., gold and silver, pearlescent colors or fluorescent colors), dyeing results will vary. Leather with added gold dust for special effects is prone to color loss (even for those from the brand’s original manufacturers) and fading. We will need to find a matching color for areas with severe color loss, and if it’s impossible to do so, no further treatments can be offered. (Though the matching color can be removed later on, but slight damage or residue might occur to the leather during the dyeing process.) We can re-assess whether to go for a similar color minus the metallic or fluorescent effect.
11. In cases of darkened dirt or dye migration which might be highlighted when the bag is covered with its original dye, we will cover up the dirt with a thicker dye, which will make the patterns on the leather less visible or the texture less delicate, as is normal. To avoid the dirt being highlighted will take longer during the quality check stage, possibly by a week for extra work.
12. In cases where the bag dyeing requires more than 1 colors, there will be an additional color-mixing charge of SGD 50 for each extra color. Quotes will be notified for confirmation.
13. Jet dyeing may more or less cause fine particles or tiny short hair to attach onto products, which might later on lead to a dusty or grainy texture on certain areas. This is only visible on close inspection, but not from afar.
14. If no matched color is specified at the time of submission, we will exercise our own judgment. Once the dyeing is in progress, no objections can be raised.
15. In cases of color altering of certain colors or material deterioration in enameled leather bags and cloth bags, for which customers still agree to a dyeing treatment, no dyeing results can be guaranteed, and no warranty will apply here.
16. If approved by evaluation, dyeing may reduce yellowing in materials and dye migration by ink of ballpoint pens or other paints. But risks for recurrent yellowing after the dye are normal, and warranty does not apply here.
17. Warranty of 30 days for regular colors and 15 days for altered colors and certain colors (metallic colors, e.g., gold and silver, pearlescent colors or fluorescent colors), is provided after the dye treatment.

=>Ink on materials like PVC, enameled leather, synthetic leather cannot be removed.
2. Dye migration (from other items e.g. denim trousers, or caused when surrounding items lose colors, or when washed by the owner):
